Sacajawea

Sacajawea
Here your memorial stands
High on a wind swept plain|
On the Wind River Reservation in Wyoming.
You were beyond your times
But a part of them too
For people do not seem to know
How native women are esteemed.
You scouted on ahead
All the way to Oregon
Isn't that what a woman does
Looking beyond the moment
To make sure all is well.

You went on such a long trip
But still you managed to carry on
Your life as a woman
Two strong boys you birthed
Basil and Batiste
Raised along your journey through life.
You were who Grandfather created you to be
Not just hiding by your teepee
You grabbed life and explored it
You traveled far and long
No need for any old Women's Liberation
You fulfilled His dream for you
I admire you
